Lee County Recruitment Event

On February 1st, 2012 the ID&R Office was invited to participate in a local recruitment event with the Lee County Migrant Education Program (MEP) staff: Coordinator Therese Carmelite and recruiters Becky Silva, Saby Ibanez and Willy Benitez, II.

The event was held in conjunction with Brother Ben from St. Leo Catholic Church in Bonita Springs who donated clothes, shoes, blankets, and other items to migrant families and youth at the Six L’s migrant camp in Estero, FL. Every fall the Lee MEP invites Brother Ben to a local migrant camp to distribute items. Over 15 years ago veteran recruiter Becky Silva spoke to fellow parishioners at St. Leo Catholic Church about the great needs of OSY. This conversation started a productive partnership between the Lee County MEP and St. Leo to help address the needs of OSY at the 6L migrant camp.

During this year’s event, MEP staff was able to interview families and youth to determine if they were eligible for the migrant education program and the families were given an opportunity to select some of the donated items.

The event proved to be a success - the Lee County MEP was able to enroll 22 new OSYs and one new family. The MEP staff passed out OSY bags with basic necessities to each youth enrolled in the program, as well as books and art supplies to the children in the camp.
